Low Motility
High Motility
Motility describes how well sperm move. It’s reported as progressive (forward-swimming), non-progressive (movement without forward travel), and immotile (no movement). Progressive motility is the type most closely linked to sperm reaching the egg. Sperm need energy to swim, powered by mitochondria, the cell’s energy engines. If mitochondrial output is low, sperm may still be present in good numbers but show more non-progressive or immotile patterns due to reduced strength and endurance.

DNA integrity refers to how intact the genetic material in sperm is. It isn’t assessed in a standard semen analysis, so results may appear normal even when DNA damage is present. This requires a separate DNA fragmentation test. Damage is often linked to oxidative stress, but also age, varicocele, infection or inflammation, heat exposure, smoking, alcohol, metabolic issues, and environmental toxins.
